Breakfast refers to the English term “Breaking the fasting period of the previous night”. It is the very first meal of the day we eat after waking up in the morning. Depending on where you are in the world, your breakfast menu may differ.
In Ghana, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Ghanaians enjoy both traditional and continental breakfast such as the English and American Breakfast, which consists of eggs, baked beans, white bread, and a cup of chocolate drink, coffee, or tea.
Whiles others believe breakfast should be light yet filling, some Ghanaians think otherwise. Below we list the surprisingly heavy foods people eat for breakfast in Ghana.
Waakye

Waakye is a mixture of rice and black eyed peas served with a special stew, fish, salad and hard boiled egg. This meal can be seen around every vehicle station or bus stops around the country.
Kenkey

Kenkey is a staple dish made from fermented corn and other ingredients. It is also known as kɔmi (pronounced kormi) by the Gas’ or dokono by the Akans in Ghana. Kenkey is usually served with freshly grounded pepper, shito, fried fish or/and sardines.
Gari and Beans

Black-eyed beans with gari, fried plantain, red oil, and in some cases hard-boiled egg is a dish is eaten by the people of Ghana and often consumed as breakfast. Other names for this dish are bober, borbor, or gobe, yo ke gari, and red red.
Ice kenkey with milk and groundnut

Ice kenkey served with milk, groundnut & sugar is a popular breakfast in Ghana. It is made from Kenkey which is a staple dish made from fermented corn.
Oblayo

Oblayo is a Ghanaian breakfast made from corn and often served with milk, sugar and white bread. This meal is common amongst the people of Ghana and is sold along the streets or hawked in neighborhoods across the country.
Banku with soup/pepper

Banku is a Ghanaian dish made with a slightly-fermented mixture of corn-dough and cassava-dough cooked and molded into big or small balls and served with soup or hot grounded pepper. This dish is eaten as breakfast in several parts of Ghana.
