IQUAN – Artist Profile

Maxwell Désiré Afrey-Mensah Known as Iquan is a Ghanaian and Ivorian male musician.
“I’m a Ghanaian, but I’ve got Ivorian blood in me so I defend both countries.”

In the early days of his career, He was not a musician. He was an artist.

“Yes, I was into Art, even though music is Art, it wasn’t that kind of Art. I made portraits of stars like Rihanna, James Harden, and others, in the charcoal medium. I continued this for about 6 years of my life, cause it was a passion. “

In Senior High, Adisadel College in Cape Coast, He started to develop a passion for dance as well as Art. It continued for almost all the 3 years in Adisco, but at the later part of his high school years is when he began to rap.

“I began writing lines for fun. I was not taking it seriously at that time because there were a lot of rappers in my batch of Santaclausians. The first time I stepped in a music studio to record was in Kwame Nkrumah university of science and technology. I met a lot of friends there. As the saying goes you need help to get to where you are willing to get; So a guy named Tom, took me to my first Sound Engineer in a ghetto. “

According To Iquan, a Nigerian sound engineer called Chizzy Cromie, who was two years ahead of him in school, recorded his first-ever song titled ‘’Baby Boo’’.

” Normally when recording, one has to take it section by section, but I did not do that. I actually sang the full song at once, and Chizzy Cromie was amazed and we became close at once due to the way he admired my energy.”

Iquan also stated, “I was not a rapper when I started recording. I switched into the Dancehall genre, wicked right? As a beginner, I didn’t have concrete words so I began listening to the top Reggae/ Dancehall artists like Popcaan, Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Jahvinci and others. Their influence made my lingua perfect as time went on and up till now, I’m still learning their language.
