10 Best Ghanaian Local Snacks to Try When You Visit Ghana

1. Nkatecake (Peanut candy bar)

Groundnut cake or peanut cake often referred to as Nkatie Cake is a popular Ghanaian snack made from fresh roasted groundnuts or peanuts and melted sugar. Nkatie cake is a locally made snack usually shaped like a square candy bar. This is by far one of my Best Ghanaian Local Snacks EVER! It is very tasty, crunchy, and definitely a must-try when you visit Ghana.

2. Ayigbe Toffee (Condensed milk toffee)

Condensed milk toffee or Caramel toffee is known in Ghana as Ayigbe toffee or Kube toffee. This is a locally made caramel candy snack usually brown in color made with condensed milk, butter, and sugar. It is very tasty and addictive I must warn you. 😉 But overall, it’s definitely a must-try when you visit Ghana. You can find this mostly in the local markets in the country.

3. Egg and Pepper

Egg and pepper is a Ghanaian homemade/street snack consisting of two pieces of half eggs with a filling of hot chilli sauce and sliced onions between them, mostly eaten as a light meal. This snack is made with hard-boiled egg, grounded hot red chilli sauce and sliced onions. It can be easily prepared at home in less than 10 minutes or bought from the streets of Accra or any part of Ghana. It is mostly sold by female hawkers during the day only. The price of one egg and pepper meal costs 1 Ghana Cedi ($0.173).

4. Bofrot (BOFLOT, PUFF PUFF, BEIGNETS)

Bofrot is a local Ghanaian snack made of fried dough. The prominence of this delicacy stretches even to the eastern and southern edges of West Africa, where it is mostly known as mandazi or puff-puff. Ghanaian bofrot or boflot consists of flour, melted Butter, Nutmeg, Salt, Sugar, and dry Yeast. Often consumed with porridge, soda, or peanut butter. Certainly one of the best locally made snacks in the country. Ghanaian boflot is very rich, tasty, and filling.

5. Spicy peanut balls (Adaakwa or zowey)

Adaakwa or Zowey is a spicy peanut ball Ghanaian local snack made of groundnut powder and maize. This snack is very dense, highly nutritious, and satisfying. It cost less than $0.50 for about 4 of these spicy peanut snacks.

Roasted corn with dry coconut is a very common, easy-to-find Ghanaian local snack mostly sold on the streets of Accra and other parts of Ghana. This snack is made from corn and dry coconut fruit and is very satisfying. The combination of both foods creates a delicious tasty bite.

7. AGBELIKANKLO

Agbeli Kaklo is a Ghanaian snack made from cassava and eaten by the locals, the snack originated from the southern part of the Volta Region. It is very crunchy and mostly eaten with hard coconut. The snack is named as such because it is derived from cassava.

8. Poloo Biscuit (coconut biscuit)

Poloo biscuit pronounced as POWLOW is a tasty crunchy Ghanaian local snack made from fried coconut dough. It’s crispy on the outside and a little flaky on the inside. This snack is often bought from local sellers in the markets or on the roadside. Grabbing one of these on the streets will cost you about $0.15 only.

9. Asaana Drink

Asaana is a local Ghanaian drink made from fermented corn and caramelized sugar. Its tastes very good and it is highly refreshing. Often sold in local markets in the country. Cost less than $0.50

10. Sobolo Drink (Bissap)
