Hushpuppi, Woodbery, and Others Reportedly Involved in $435.6 million Cyber Crime.

Nigerian born Instagram stars, Hushpuppi, Mr. Woodbery, and others have reportedly been arrested by the FBI for undergoing series of cybercrimes amounting to $435.6 million (AED1.6 billion).

A team of highly trained Dubai officers were able to confirm the gang’s whereabouts and fraudulent activities in an Operation dubbed; “Fox Hunt 2”. The Nigerian Instagram celebrity who was arrested on multiple fraud charges for crimes committed in different parts of the world, boasted about his wealth and expensive possessions on social media claiming he is a successful  Real Estate Developer.

Little did Hushpuppi Know, The Dubai E-police teams were tracking his every move online and taking notes of all his social media activities. Hushpuppi and his team of scammers were known for creating fake pages for existing websites in order to re-direct victims payments into their own accounts.

The Dubai police also found the Gang specialize in Hacking corporate emails and sending fake messages to clients in order to re-direct financial transfers and people’s bank details to their own accounts. This scam is known as the BEC Scam, BEC which stands for Business Email Compromise is a type of scam targeting businesses and companies that have suppliers and conduct wire transfers abroad.

BEC scams often take place when a scammer or hacker gets access to an executive or high-employees (mostly in the financial department of the company) email address by spoofing or phishing to make fraudulent transfers from the company’s account to theirs causing serious financial loss to the company.

Before the arrest, Hushpuppi and his crew members were involved in cybercrimes amounting to 1 Billion and 600 million dirhams. In the operation, Dubai Police officers were also able to seize items worth more than 150 million dirhams after they claimed 21 laptops, 47 mobile phones, 5 flash drives, and 5 hard disks containing data of 1,926,400 Victims.
